La forma, le dimensioni, i materiali e gli accessori di uno skateboard si sono evoluti in funzione della tecnologia, delle mode e delle specialità di questo attrezzo. Uno skateboard è composto da varie parti: la tavola (deck), i carrelli (trucks), le ruote (wheels) e i cuscinetti (bearings).

Tavola

La tavola (deck o board) ricorda la forma di una tavola da surf o da snowboard, a seconda delle specialità, è leggermente concava costruita in multistrato di acero canadese a 7 strati (tavole professionali) o 9 strati (tavole non professionali). Talvolta si usano metalli come l'alluminio o materiali compositi come la vetroresina o il Kevlar per diminuirne il peso e incrementarne la resistenza o la rigidità.

La tavola è larga 19–20 cm e lunga 75-80  cm, la punta (nose) e la coda (tail) differiscono per lunghezza ed inclinazione; i longboards funride e le tavole professionali in Kevlar da StreetSlalom ricordano i surf e sono concave (a "cucchiaio" per maggior controllo) e camberate (ovvero hanno una centina per il pareggio del peso ed il ritorno di spinta nella flessione della stessa), mentre nei modelli street/vert la punta è più angolata e lunga, mentre la coda è più corta e meno angolata.

La superficie è rivestita di uno strato antisdrucciolevole, che ricorda la carta abrasiva, per migliorarne l'aderenza (grip). La superficie inferiore, solitamente decorata da disegni, può ospitare due sottili strisce di plastica utili a ridurre l'attrito durante gli slide.

Fra le cose da considerare nella scelta di una tavola è la disciplina praticata. Le differenze infatti sono importanti sia in dimensioni che in materiali utilizzati fra uno stile e l'altro. Vanno poi considerate la propria altezza e la dimensione dei piedi, sebbene siano indicative.[1]

Trucks

Sotto alla tavola ci sono i due truck, generalmente in alluminio, composti da varie parti. La base è avvitata con viti passanti alla tavola e l'asse delle ruote è collegata alla base da un perno e da due anelli di materiale gommoso (gommini o bushing) che permettono all'asse di ruotare. Utilizzando il peso del corpo lo skateboard gira verso la direzione voluta. La morbidezza dei due gommini, opportunamente regolata, determina la rigidità della sterzata ed il conseguente raggio di curva nello StreetSlalom o della manovra nello streetstyle. Ai trucks sono fissati gli assi delle ruote, a loro volta montate su cuscinetti a sfere; tutto l'insieme prende il nome di carrello, che può essere tradizionale o con sterzata diagonale. Tra la tavola e i trucks vengono aggiunti degli spessori in gomma morbida detti 'Riser Pads' per ridurre le vibrazioni e l'impatto sul legno dopo l'atterraggio dei tricks (manovre).

Ogni truck è composto da:

  1. un bullone centrale (kingpin),
  2. una base, un asse trasversale, all estremità filettata (hanger) articolato con la base,
  3. due gommini (bushing) con due rondelle,
  4. un cappuccio (pivot bushing) per la parte dell'asse che si articola con la base,
  5. le viti per attaccarlo alla tavola.

Ruote

Alle estremità degli assi ci sono le ruote. Normalmente sono fatte di poliuretano montate su cuscinetti e sono reperibili in varie misure e durezze per adattarsi alle diverse specialità e alle varie superfici, come strada, slalom o rampa. Queste sono bloccate da dadi autobloccanti in acciaio e nylon. Quelle più grandi sono più veloci e quindi adatte alle rampe verticali, allo slalom, alla velocità ed alle discese molto ripide, con longskate (stand up) e streetluge (posizione prona), mentre quelle piccole sono più leggere ed adatte alle evoluzioni su pista ed in piano (flat). Le ruote più usate sono le 54 e le 24, usate prevalentemente per prestazioni su rampe.

All'interno di ciascuna ruota vengono alloggiati due cuscinetti distanziati da un apposito distanziatore (spacer). I cuscinetti vengono identificati secondo la scala ABEC, misura di tolleranza interna che va da 1 a 9 per numeri dispari. Generalmente ABEC 5 è un buon compromesso che permette di avere un'ottima scorrevolezza a parità di prezzo.

Sicurezza

Necessarie per il sicuro utilizzo dello skateboard sono le protezioni: polsiere, gomitiere, casco, ginocchiere per tutti e corpetto (body shield) o tute pelle per le velocità (downhill).

Diffusione dello skateboard in Italia

La diffusione in Italia si deve ad un servizio del programma televisivo Odeon nel 1977, rubrica di spettacolo e curiosità dal mondo. In quell'inverno si registra un autentico picco di vendite, soprattutto del modello Saturnus, dal caratteristico colore arancio. In assenza di opportune strutture dedicate, strade e marciapiedi sono invasi da giovanissimi entusiasti, un successo accompagnato da numerosissimi incidenti: come avveniva con le due ruote, prima dell'avvento dell'obbligatorietà si tendeva difatti ad un risparmio in fatto di sicurezza e protezioni, come casco, ginocchiera ed altri a tutela di mani e gomiti. Per la forte pericolosità dovuta alle numerose strade in discesa, Genova fu la prima città a vietare la circolazione dello skateboard, divieto esteso all'inizio del 1978 in tutto il territorio nazionale.
