咖啡豆是咖啡屬植物的種子，咖啡屬植物的果實大小類似櫻桃，咖啡豆即為其中的核果。將咖啡豆烘焙加工後再磨碎成咖啡粉，即可烹製咖啡。
阿拉比卡種75-80％ 和羅布斯塔種20％ 兩個主要的經濟品種。阿拉比卡種的咖啡因含量約為0.8-1.4%，而羅布斯塔種則含1.7-4%。[1]由於咖啡是世界上消費最廣泛的飲料之一，咖啡種子是一個主要的經濟作物，一個重要的出口產品。[2]

咖啡樹正常的一株咖啡樹通常可以長到5米（16英尺）至10米（33英尺）高，不過為了採收方便，豆農們常將其修剪至2米（6.6英尺）以下。[3]
